Writing out numbers in words...
#1
I am working out a program to automatically write checks...I am hung up on getting numbers to become the words...

i.e.

"$512.96" would become "Five-Hundred Twelve and 96/100 Dollars"

There's probably a simple way to do this right?

Thanks,
Jimmy Vig

This function converts 1 digit in string.
Function NumberToWord
Code:
Copy      Help
;/
function# $number str&_word

;number - string that begins with character '0' - '9'.
;_word - str variable that receives word "One" - "Nine".

_word.fix(0)
if(!number) ret
int i=number[0]-'0'
if(i<0 or i>9) ret
_word.getl("Zero[]One[]Two[]Three[]Four[]Five[]Six[]Seven[]Eith[]Nine" i)
ret 1

Macro
Code:
Copy      Help
str s="0123456789"
int i
for i 0 s.len
,str sw
,NumberToWord s+i sw
,out sw
,

Converting to "Twelve", "Twenty thousands" etc would be difficult.

Vary good but what about the "$",",","."

I found Visual Basic function SpellNumber here: http://www.ozgrid.com/VBA/ValueToWords.htm
Instead of converting it to QM I converted it to VBScript to use with QM VBScript functions. Just removed several "As String", several empty lines, and replaced Val to CLng. Works but needs more testing.

Function SpellNumber
Code:
Copy      Help
function str'number str&words

;Converts numeric currency to words.
;Error if number is invalid.
;number may begin or end with $, and may contain ,.

;EXAMPLES
;str sw
;SpellNumber 50845212.57 sw
;out sw
;SpellNumber "$2,512.96" sw
;out sw

number.trim("$ ")
number.findreplace(",")
int-- t_codeadded; if(!t_codeadded) t_codeadded=1; VbsAddCode "SpellNumberVbCode" 1
words=VbsFunc("SpellNumber" number)
err end _error
words.findreplace("  " " ")

Macro SpellNumberVbCode
note: paste without ;, or will not work

I'm sure this could be formatted a bit better. I only wrote it out to do thousands...but it would just repeat out to get bigger numbers.

Gintaras thank you for leaving this in VbCode. I have had to do a lot of learning this week about codes like C++ and VB and having another piece of what I call transfer code is very important to me.
#7
I tweaked the the codes a bit...I like the "-" in between a tens place and ones...like Seventy-Two instead of Seventy Two.
Also, I put a comma in after in between appropriate number places.
This only works for currency right now.
