is there any chance that we can get drop support for toolbar buttons ?

Drop file support already is. You probably need drop notification instead of inserting button for file. Not in QM 2.1.9.

lets say button size is 16px,
i have not tested it, but maybe a transparent RichEdit20A with a Static icon/bmp under it could work ?

in this raw example file drop on a edit control works.
the dialog could be used on a toolbar as child.
